The Vietnamese government approved a law regulating the conduct of operations, sex change and the status of patients undergoing such surgery.Under the new rules sex-change operations are allowed to hold people with gender identity disorders, as well as hermaphrodites.A decision on the need for surgery will receive special medical commission.The law guarantees the confidentiality of patient information and prohibits all forms of discrimination against transgender people.After surgery, they have the right to change the name and get a new pa*sport.New documents can also get Vietnamese citizens who changed sex abroad.Persons with no explicit mental and physiological abnormalities sex change is still banned.According to observers, the new law was a revolutionary step for the Vietnamese society, traditionally characterized by a conservative attitude toward sexuality.
